The UK Continental Shelf (UKCS) comprises areas of the sea bed and subsoil beyond the territorial sea over which the UK exercises sovereign rights of exploration and exploitation of natural resources. The Continental Shelf (Designation of Areas) Order 2013 (made 31 March 2014)  delineates the shelf and replaced two previous Orders, dating to 2000 and 2001 that had been made under powers in The Continental Shelf Act 1964.

The order divides United Kingdom territorial waters and waters within areas designated as part of the United Kingdom continental shelf (under the Continental Shelf Act 1964) into English, Scottish and Northern Irish parts to which English, Scottish and Northern Irish civil law is applied respectively, and confers jurisdiction accordingly on the High Court in England and Wales, the Court of Session and the High Court in Northern Ireland.

Renewable Energy Zone (REZ) and Gas Importation and Storage Zone (GISZ) Limits adjacent to Scotland - EEZ Order 2013

The Gas Importation and Storage Zone and the Renewable Energy Zone generally follow the EEZ boundary. Under treaties with Denmark relating to the Faroe Islands the area to the north of the line specified (i.e between the EEZ and the GISZ and REZ) can only be utilised for the purposes of renewable energy and gas storage with the prior consent of Denmark.
