Carbon Capture and Storage - Crown Estate Scotland leases and saline aquifers

The ten saline aquifers with potential for CO2 storage are colour coded according to whether they meet minimum (orange) or best (green) practise geotechnical requirements (see Table 5 in both the 2009 and 2011 reports). They each have a unique size and shape, and the majority cover areas of several thousand square kms (the underlying sandstone aquifer shapes). In some places, the saline aquifers overlap each other, being present at different depths at the same geographical location. The orange and green circles denote their approximate central points. Figure 8 in the 2011 report (Progressing Scotland's CO2 storage opportunities (2011)) shows that the actual distribution of aquifers dwarf the extent of the hydrocarbon fields.
