Pentland Firth and Orkney Waters Strategic Area: Marine Energy Resources

What is it: 

The five layers show:

  • Annual Mean Significant Wave Height - mean annual wave height (trough to crest) of the highest third of the waves
  • Annual Mean Wave Power - mean annual potential energy in kWatt m-1 generated by waves around the PFOW area
  • Peak Flow for a Mean Spring Tide - mean annual flow velocity in ms-1 for the spring tide
  • Mean Spring Tidal Power Density - mean annual potential power in kWatt m-2 generated by the Spring tidal flow in the PFOW area
  • Mean Spring Tidal Range - mean vertical difference between the high tide and the succeeding low tide for the spring tide

The layers are taken from the report 'Pentland Firth and Orkney Waters Strategic Area: Marine Energy Resources' funded by The Crown Estate. The report is based on the outputs from a full hydrodynamic wave model and defines the marine renewable energy resource information at a regional scale.

The modelling results have produced an enhanced definition of marine renewable energy resource with improvements of spatial resolution, underlying bathymetry and length of data series over that previously available in the Atlas of UK Marine Energy Resources (ABPmer, 2008).
