Scottish Assessment areas - Scottish Marine Regions and Offshore Marine Regions; Scottish Sea Areas (clean and safe seas monitoring)

What is it:

The sea areas on which the 2011 Scotland’s Marine Atlas assessment was undertaken, the Scottish Sea Areas, are displayed in the MS Maps NMPi section ‘Overall Assessment (Scotland's Marine Atlas 2011)’. Links to be layers can be found in the 'Maps' tab below.

For future assessments, the assessed areas will be based on two maps, which are shown as:

  1. Scottish Assessment areas  - Scottish Marine Regions and Offshore Marine Regions – this uses
    • statutory Scottish Marine Regions (SMRs) (defined in The Scottish Marine Regions Order 2015 and collectively known as the 'Scottish Inshore Region' as defined in the Marine and Coastal Access Act 2009) inside the 12 mile territorial sea limit; and
    • non-statutory Offshore Marine Regions (OMRs) (slightly revised / renamed Scottish Sea Areas) outside of 12 mile limit. These OMRs are sub divisions of the 'Scottish Offshore Region' as defined in the Marine and Coastal Access Act 2009.
  2. Scottish Assessment areas  - Scottish Sea Areas (clean and safe seas monitoring) – for a limited number of ‘clean and safe sea’ monitored parameters the previous non-statutory Scottish Seas Areas (revised to take account of the 2013 EEZ changes) are still used.
