Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) - Saline Aquifer Areas
This map layer has been supplied directly by Marine Scotland National Marine Plan interactive. You can obtain additional information about the layer on this page
This dataset contains the locations of the ten saline aquifers with potential as carbon dioxide (CO2) storage sites in the Scottish offshore area as identified in 2009. They each have a unique size and shape, and the majority cover areas of several thousand square kms (the underlying sandstone aquifer shapes). In some places, the saline aquifers overlap each other, being present at different depths at the same geographical location. The approximate central points of these ten saline aquifers are depicted in the Saline Aquifer Site layer, and are colour coded according to whether they meet minimum (orange) or best (green) practise geotechnical requirements.
