What is it: 

There are three elements included in the data layer:

  1. Approximate site (point data) of historic chemical munitions disposal.
  2. Approximate site (point data) of historic explosives disposal.
  3. Charted area (polygon) of historic explosives disposal.

A background document on the dumping of munitions, called ' British Isles Explosive Dumping Grounds DOC' can be found on the National Archives web site (see Data Sources link).

The London Convention on the Disposal of Wastes at Sea (1972) and the Oslo Convention on the Prevention of Marine Pollution in the North East Atlantic (1972) ended munitions disposal on the UK Continental Shelf. The Oslo and Paris Conventions later became the OSPAR Convention (1992).
