Scheduled Monuments (HES WMS)

What is it: 

A scheduled monument is a monument of national importance that Scottish Ministers have given protection under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979.

Although the majority are on land, a small number lie under the sea, for example 7 wrecks of the German High Seas fleet in Scapa Flow.

Historic Environment Scotland recommends monuments for scheduling, actively encourages positive management of scheduled monuments and controls works to them through the legal consent process.
