Global Fishing Watch analyze automatic identification system (AIS) and vessel monitoring system (VMS) data collected from vessels and transmitted through satellite and terrestrial receivers. GFW apply a fishing detection algorithm to determine “apparent fishing activity” based on changes in vessel speed and direction.
