AIS Shipping Traffic - First week of January 2010 (Number of intersecting vessels) |
Map shows number of vessels using class A AIS (vessels >300t, AIS working and not switched off, position info is accurate) and excludes vessels <300t, fishing vessels, recreational craft, vessels carrying class B AIS. AIS (Automatic Identification System) is a carriage requirement for SOLAS vesels and is an integral part of the EU Vessel Traffic Monitoring and Information Directive (2002/59/EC).

Oil and Gas - Offshore Oil and Gas Licensing Blocks (OGA) |
This dataset shows blocks and part blocks subject to periodic oil and gas Licensing Rounds (now issued by Oil and Gas Authority - previously DECC). It does not contain definitive legal boundaries. This layer shows the general grid on which offshore oil and gas licensing is based.
The data can be downloaded from https://data-ogauthority.opendata.arcgis.com/. The onshore licensed and offered blocks were modified to include only coastal areas.

Dredge Spoil Disposal Sites - Open |
This layer shows the locations of dredge spoil disposal sites that are designated as open (in use). The locations are indicated by points (beyond 1:2,000,000) and polygons (below 1:2,000,000). The spoil is usually as a result of navigational dredging (deepening of navigation channels) on the approaches to ports and harbours.

Water Abstraction - Coastal abstraction points |
Abstraction involves taking water, via pipe, from the sea, using it for an industrial process and then returning it to the sea. SEPA regulates the abstraction of water from the marine environment. This layer displays the locations of coastal water abstractions authorised by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA). It includes details of maximum abstraction rates and industrial sector codes. (Sites greater than two miles from coast have been removed)

Marine Environmental High Risk Areas (MEHRA) (OSCP) - August 2016 |
This layer shows Marine Environmental High Risk Areas (MEHRAs). MEHRAs are "... to inform [ships'] Masters of areas where there is a real prospect of a problem arising. This prime purpose stands alone and regardless of any consequential defensive measures", and resulted from the Safer Ships, Cleaner Sea recommendations of the Donaldson inquiry. The areas are noted in Notice to Mariners (NtM) and the 2006 Report "Establishment of Marine Environmental High Risk Areas (MEHRAs) - Protection of United Kingdom Waters from Pollution from Ships".

Ports and Harbours - Statutory harbour limits |
This layer shows the statutory harbour limits of ports/harbours around Scotland. It defines the full harbour extent of ports/harbours in Scotland, according to habour limits which are set down in Harbour Order legislation. The dataset is derived from a number of sources and may be incomplete (see 'sorind' field for source). The dataset uses S57 attributes for fieldnames, see http://www.s-57.com/ for more details.

Areas where fishing with (STATIC) HOOKS is restricted |
Fishing pressures can be managed using spatial measures such as prohibiting or restricting certain types of fishing, target species, or vessel capacity. This dataset depicts restrictions on fishing with (STATIC) HOOKS defined by EU, UK and Scottish legislation since 1986. Polygons were simplified for web use and are for illustrative purposes only. Guidance should be sought from Fishery Offices on interpreting legislation.

Areas where fishing with BOTTOM TRAWLS is restricted |
Fishing pressures can be managed using spatial measures such as prohibiting or restricting certain types of fishing, target species, or vessel capacity. This dataset depicts restrictions on fishing with BOTTOM TRAWLS defined by EU, UK and Scottish legislation since 1986. Polygons were simplified for web use and are for illustrative purposes only. Guidance should be sought from Fishery Offices on interpreting legislation.

Areas where fishing with PELAGIC TRAWLS is restricted |
Fishing pressures can be managed using spatial measures such as prohibiting or restricting certain types of fishing, target species, or vessel capacity. This dataset depicts restrictions on fishing with PELAGIC TRAWLS defined by EU, UK and Scottish legislation since 1986. Polygons were simplified for web use and are for illustrative purposes only. Areas where fishing with DREDGES is restricted |
Fishing pressures can be managed using spatial measures such as prohibiting or restricting certain types of fishing, target species, or vessel capacity. This dataset depicts restrictions on fishing with SCALLOP DREDGES defined by EU, UK and Scottish legislation since 1986. Polygons were simplified for web use and are for illustrative purposes only. Guidance should be sought from Fishery Offices on interpreting legislation.
