Description
The Scottish Seaside Awards scheme exists to reward good beach management, which increases the pleasure local people derive from their beach and also benefits the local economy through an expansion in tourism. The Blue Flag beach award is an international programme administered by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) and operational in almost 50 countries worldwide. Blue Flag status is dependent on meeting criteria in the four broad areas of environmental education and information, water quality, environmental management and safety and services.
In 2013-2015, a Scotland focused approach was implemented, with two categories of seaside award: rural and resort beach, with differing criteria. In 2016, to simplify the process, the Seaside Award was merged together into the Beach Award (available as seperate layer).
