Black guillemot

What is it: 

Black guillemots (known as tystie in Shetland) are widely distributed around the Scottish coast, but with the main concentrations in the Northern Isles and west coast.

The SNH - Seabird Trend Note (No.021, October 2012) contains maps and population estimates for Northern fulmar, European shag, Arctic skua, Herring gull, Great black-backed gull, Black-legged kittiwake, Sandwich tern, Common tern, Common guillemot and Black guillemot.

SNH Commissioned Report 792: Marine Protected Area - related black guillemot surveys 2014 - supports work on MPAs. Black guillemots were surveyed at two sites in Scotland, East Caithness Cliffs and Clyde Sea Sill MPAs, from late March to April 2014. The data from these counts was then compared with counts collected in a similar manner for Seabird 2000.
